It looks like Thatcham Town will be on the look out for another striker in their quest for promotion after talks have broken down with Hungerford Town for long-term Thatcham target Darren Howell. Both parties could not agree a price for the centre forward and Chief Executive Steve Melledew confirmed that Town boss Jason Braidwood will be speaking to some other potential targets over the next few days.
“Unfortunately negotiations have broken down today with myself and Hungerford Town as we could not agree a reasonable price for Darren (Howell). I must admit I am very disappointed as it looked like we were very close to a deal on Tuesday night and Hungerford were meant to come back to me but I have had to chase them today for an answer. Hungerford have come back with an extortionate price that they want for the player and also they would like one of our players to go in their direction as part of the deal. Jason and I know that Darren is a very good player and he would be an asset to the club especially at this time of the season but the lad has only got four months left on his contract and is 32 years old and we went in with a very good offer and in my opinion they have come back and completely out priced the player. It is a real shame as I have been getting vibes around the changing room that the player would really like to come and talk to us. I am certainly surprised that Hungerford have turned down some good money for a player who hasn't got very long left on his contract and in the end we might get him for free next season whether we get promotion or not. It looks like the deal is dead and buried unless Hungerford have a rethink and want to renegotiate as I also had something else for them consider as part of the deal but I did not want to give my hand away as they were pretty adamant on the price. Although Darren was our number one target we have got other players that we will be speaking to over the next week or so.”
I understand that he's playing for Thatcham tomorrow, but has not signed a contract. So he can play in both leagues. Think Hungerford struggling for a side for Tuesday and that's why he's likely to play. I'm sure he won't be lining up against us tomorrow
