The FTL Futbol Hellenic League.                                  Saturday, 28th March,2009.

Premier League.

Sweet revenge for Wantage Town as they thump three passed Fairford Town.

Wantage Town F.C.  3  (1)    Fairford Town F.C.    0 (0)

Back in November Fairford Town inflicted Wantage’s heaviest defeat of the season so today’s solid performance and 3 – 0 score line went along way to erase that memory.

The only change to today’s team line up that beat Old Woodstock 4 – 0 on Wednesday night was the return to the mid field of the hard working Ellis Langford in place of Liam Illsely, who dropped to the bench.  There was also a welcome return to the bench for Matty Horsell, after a long period out injuried.

Wantage Town started the game kicking up the slope of the superbly maintained pitch and with the wind at their backs.  The game should have been all over in the first 15 minutes as Wantage Towns, Richie Guy and Danny Keen, both had good chances to kill the game off.   It took a well flighted free kick from the ever youthful Andy Wallbridge in the 27th minute to open the scoring.  The free kick was headed towards the goal by Adam Learoyd, but Fairford's Town’s goal keeper acrobatically saved the header , only to see the ball rebound into the path of Tom Rowe who smashed the ball into the net.  For the rest of the half Wantage Town continued to play sharp attacking football, but could not break down a stubborn Fairford Town defence.  The half time whistle blew 1 – 0 to Wantage Town.

An enforced substitution was made before the start of the second half, Sean McKeon, replacing the injured Richie Guy.  The second half began completely opposite to the first half with Fairford Town having all the possession.  They forced Wantage Town’s defence back deep into their own half but for all their possession, they could not find an equalising goal.   From a rare second half Wantage attack, Gavin Jones forced a Wantage Town corner.  From the resulting corner Adam Learoyd jumped unchallenged on the six yard box to head the ball over the Fairford goal keeper and into the top of the net.  2 – 0 to Wantage.  This goal deflated Fairford Town but encouraged Wantage Town, and, for the rest of the half, Wantage Town carved out and squandered good goal scoring opportunities.  It was deep into time added on when Wantage Town scored their third goal, when Sean McKeon coolly ran on to a through ball from the impressive Danny Keen and placed a low hard shot into the corner of the Fairford Town goal.  The game ended 3 – 0 to Wantage Town.

This capped off a great week for Wantage Town on and off the pitch.  The three wins in a week, coupled with the ground improvements, have all but guaranteed Hellenic Premier League status for Wantage Town for another year.  Great credit must be given to the Chairman and the Manager for achieving this objective.

Team.    Darryl Simms, Tom Rowe, Adam Learoyd, Gary Swann, Andy Wallbridge, Liam McCullough, Gavin Jones, Ellis Langford, Danny Keen, Richard Guy, Sam Belcher.

Subs.     Sean McKeon, Liam Illsley, Matty Horsell.

What a difference when we are winning you would not beleive it was the same team that lost 6 - 1  at fairford and i stayed to the end of this game,  well done lads keep up the momentum. also a big thank you to our chairman for getting all the extra re grading works sorted out in time and sticking with the Club through all the rules and regulations thrown at him and lastly for Bourno ( the big hen ) for keeping faith with the team and club through all the difficult periods.

Good shout mate. I'll second that.
Regards, Will
