The FTL Futbol Hellenic League

Wednesday, 18th February, 2009.

Wantage battle to secure away points.  Chalfont Wasps F.C.   0   (0)    Wantage Town F.C.    2   (1)   What Manager Richie Bourne demanded after the mauling on Saturday at Almondsbury was hard work from start to finish in order to restore self-belief. The squad delivered with a purposeful, and at times, skilful performance against high flying Chalfont Wasps. A couple of times, in the first half particularly, Wantage rode their luck as Chalfont forwards missed from close-in. But the Wantage defence settled to its task, the back four of Andy Wallbridge, Adam Learoyd, Sam Belcher and Captain Gary Swann snuffing out most of what Chalfont could offer going forward. In the middle of the park, Ellis Langford and the energised Danny Allen, got through a mountain of work to create opportunities for the front pairing of Danny Keen and Sean McKeon. With half-time approaching, Danny Keen broke on the right and squared across the perfect pass which was swept swiftly into the net by Sean McKeon for his first goal for Wantage, since signing from Clanfield. In the second half, on a greasy surface, Wantage had the lion’s share of the possession, but struggled to break down a resilient Chalfont defence. Matty Horsell, slowly getting back to full fitness, had the beating of his opposite number, but the front runners for Wantage could not get on the end of his crosses. In the 75th minute, Wantage secured the game, when Danny Keen’s goal-bound shot rebounded to Liam Illsley, who prodded the ball past Steve Nott-Macaire, Chalfont’s stand-in keeper.  A clean sheet all round, with no bookings and no goal conceded. But more importantly, a performance to build on, and one to savour for the travelling few supporters who made the tricky journey, despite traffic hold-ups.               A final note in praise of Referee Ian Douglas, whose close control and good communication, prevented player nonsense escalating, as he worked hard to keep the game flowing.  Team :-        Darryl Simms, Andy Wallbridge, Adam Learoyd, Gary Swann, Sam Belcher, Danny Allen, Liam Illsley, Ellis Langford, Danny Keen, Sean McKeon, Matty Horsell.

Substitutes :-  Paul Day, Alex Welch, Richie Bourne.
