Aylesbury Vale v Wantage Town F.C. Senior Trophy Quarter Final (Berks & Bucks) Match Report
Permalink

The Berks and Bucks Football Association.Senior Trophy Quarter Final.                                                           Tuesday, 20th January, 2009. Town lose out on penalties.  Aylesbury Vale F.C.  2 (0)    Wantage Town F.C.  2  (1)    After extra time. Aylesbury Vale win 3 – 1 on penalties.           In freezing conditions, but on a level pitch, two well matched teams played out an end to end, high paced encounter, unresolved at the end of extra time, and settled in the end on penalties. Aylesbury Vale, from the Molten Spartan South Midlands League owe their victory to their keeper Eddie Farmer who saved well on a hardening surface from Danny Keen, Liam Illsley and Danny Allen, to put the home side through to the semi-final.          Wantage edged the match in normal time going ahead in the 9th minute, when Gavin Jones raced clear on the left and turned in the perfect cross into the path of Danny Keen, who made no mistake from close-in. Wantage confidently moved the ball around, but were unable to penetrate a well organised Aylesbury Vale defence. The second half started with two goals in four minutes. Alyesbury Vale equalised from a well delivered corner, Aaron Usmani being the first to react, heading in past Andy Burt in the Wantage goal. Within two minutes, Wantage retook the lead, Danny Keen forcing a great save from Eddie Farmer, the rebound falling to Nathan Hall who made no mistake from six metres out. Wantage continued to move the ball around, preventing Aylesbury Vale from building from midfield, but with four minutes left on the Referee’s watch, Stuart Corbould’s deflected shot from outside the box duped Andy Burt, and took the tie into extra-time.         Aylesbury had the lion’s share of the possession in extra-time, but could not find the net, resulting in the late-night penalty shot-out.                    Wantage players, management, and a very few hardy and cold supporters, were all disappointed that such a good performance should go unrewarded, but were left to wish their hospitable hosts good luck in the semi-final.          Team.    Andy Burt, Liam Illsley, Gary Swann, Adam Learoyd, Sam Belcher, Liam McCullough,                         Gavin Jones, Tom Malton, Danny Keen, Nathan Hall, Ellis Langford.

Subs.     Andy Wallbridge, Rob Joyce, Danny Allen.
