An early and late goal for Wantage Town contributed to Supermarine's second friendly defeat.
Although Marine's Mark Barnes headed against the bar in the first minute from an excellent cross from Tom Bird it was Wantage who grabbed the opening goal in the 4th minute. With space on the left Richard Clayton got to the by-line and his attempted cross deceived Matt Bulman to loop over his head and into the far side of the goal.
Concerted pressure on the Wantage goal eventually brought its reward in the 25th minute with two goals in as many minutes. The equaliser came from a Alan Griffin free kick that took a slight deflection before hitting the bottom corner of the net. The second, two minutes later, came from a neat move and an exchange of passes between Alan Griffin and Mark Barnes that left the latter through on goal and he clinically finished off the move as he fired past Simms in the Wantage goal.
With a 2-1 lead at half time both sides sides made changes and the home side looked capably of providing an equaliser and deservedly did so in the 50th minute. Sean MeKeon slipped past Matt Robinson to shoot at goal. The quick turn and pace of his shot deceived Matt Bulman as it swerved past him into the bottom corner of the goal. At 2-2 the game could have gone either way, although there weren't to many clear cut chances both sides had opportunities but were wasteful in there final passes. That was until the final few minutes when Wantage substitute Richard Guy broke clear from Sean Wood on the left flank and coolly lobbed Matt Bulman from an acute angle, similarly to the first goal but this was effort was clearly meant, an excellent winning goal.
Rich Claydon goal was a lovely chip with keeper scrambling back and could not make it. Sean Mckeown goal was a flick over defender head with strike into bottom corner from outside area. Richard Guy chipped keeper from just inside area with keeper off his line.
1st half - Wantage were superb. All 11 players worked very hard and kept the ball well.
Very impressed with the overall quality of our team the passing and movement was superb and commitment was brilliant if we can keep this squad together i can see a very good season coming up and that i have not seen for a number of years. Keep it up lads and stay and be part of a trophy winning team this year along with a good run in both the FA cup and Vase. Rose tinted glasses have nothing to do with it.
