Alfredians Bounce Back

Wantage travel to Carterton tomorrow, with manager Richie Bourne delighted with their midweek win.

Manager Bourne was delighted with the performance on Wednesday evening against a very strong Chalfont side, he said; We took a bit of stick after Saturdays result ( a 6-1 defeat at Almoundsbury Town), which I thought was unjust, so was delighted in the way we bounced back. The lads showed great character, and it was nothing more than I expected from them.

He went on to say; I thought overall we deserved our win, although I will say Chalfont played very well and pushed us all the way. What we have to do now is to take that performance into Saturday at Carterton, and if we can maintain the level we showed against Chalfont then there is no doubt we can move up league table and push ourselves away from danger.

The only injury concerns for manager Richie Bourne (pictured) are Nathan Hall, Sean McKeon and Andy Wallbridge.

Squad From: Daryl Sims; Sam Belcher; Andy Wallbridge; Adam Learoyd; Gary Swann; Liam Illsley; Danny Allen; Danny Keen; Liam McCullough; Ellis Langford; Sean Mckeon; Matty Horsell; Alex Welch; Nathan Hall

Unless it's a misprint, no Paul Day. Is he on holiday again

The FTL Futbol Hellenic League.                                                                 Saturday, 21st February, 2009.

Premier League.

Wantage edge past well matched opposition.

Carterton Town F.C.  2  (1)     Wantage Town F.C.  3  (2)

If Wantage had taken the array of chances that they created in the first half as they went with the wind, downhill, and the sun in their opponents faces, the second half would have been a very different affair. Principal culprit was Matty Horsell, who on a couple of occasions had the chance to put the match to bed. Wantage started brightly, in the 4th minute, Horsell slipped his defender and crossed to Danny Keen, who headed over from close-in. Five minutes later, the busy Horsell narrowly drove over Carterton keeper James Domm’s bar. Despite all the early Wantage pressure, it was Carterton who took the lead after 13 minutes, when a left wing cross was powerfully driven past ex-Carterton keeper Darryll Simms, by Craig Wood. Wantage responded immediately with the best move of the match, Sam Belcher, Matty Horsell and Danny Allen combining in a smooth left sided move that ended with the ball being slipped through to Sean McKeon, who made no mistake from 5 yards out.  Wantage maintained the pressure and were further rewarded in the 23rd minute, when Carterton failed to clear their lines. A poorly taken Wantage free kick was knocked back to Liam McCullough, who crossed again, Adam Learoyd climbed highest to nod the ball down in front of goal, where Captain Gary Swann pounced to prod the ball over the line. The half continued with Wantage having the greater share of possession, but unable to convert chances into goals.

Carterton charged down the hill in the second half, but now they could not benefit from the majority of the possession. In the 61st minute, against the run of play, Matty Horsell broke on the left and squared the ball to Liam Illsley, who finished well past the exposed James Domm in the Carterton goal, to put the away side 3 – 1 up. Carterton huffed and puffed but could not penetrate a stubborn Wantage defence, until, with five minutes to go, Carterton were awarded a free kick on the edge of the box, which was driven in by Mark Threlfall, whose powerful shot zipped past Darryl Simms into the back of the Wantage net. Carterton pressed for an equalizer, but Wantage held out to take the points.

Just a note about Referee Mr. S. Glyde, whose quiet but efficient performance was delivered because his positioning on the pitch was flawless, enabling him to be on hand to deal quickly with any of the games issues. Nice one Mr. Glyde !

This was another good performance from Wantage, who have now taken six away points since their 1 – 6 reversal at Almondsbury, last Saturday, and sets them up nicely for the long away trip to Pegasus next Tuesday evening, before their home fixture next Saturday against Marlow.

Team.     Darryl Simms, Liam Illsley, Andy Wallbridge, Gary Swann, Adam Learoyd, Sam Belcher,

Sean McKeon, Danny Allen, Danny Keen, Liam McCullough, Matty Horsell.

Subs.     Nathan Hall, Johnny James, Richie Bourne.
